This page will provide you with information about what it would be like to do a Trainee Nurse Associate (TNA) placement in the Emergency Department at QMC

What to expect on placement

TNAs will have the opportunity to observe and support resuscitation‑level care, gaining insight into the management of acutely unwell patients, emergency interventions, and the role of the multidisciplinary team in high‑pressure situations. Under supervision, you will contribute to patient care activities such as monitoring vital signs, supporting clinical procedures, maintaining infection prevention standards, and providing reassurance to patients and relatives.

In addition, a Trainee Nursing Associate will participate in the ongoing care of patients across a range of specialities, developing an understanding of different treatment pathways, clinical presentations, and care regimes commonly encountered in the Emergency Department. This includes supporting patient comfort, documentation, communication during handovers, and working alongside registered practitioners to deliver holistic, patient‑centred care.

What we expect of you

During your placement in the Emergency Department at Queen’s Medical Centre, as a Trainee Nursing Associate, you will be actively involved in the day‑to‑day delivery of urgent and emergency care within a busy tertiary setting. The placement offers hands‑on exposure to initial patient assessment, including undertaking observations, supporting triage processes, assisting with appropriate patient redirection to ensure safe and timely care, and supporting timely interventions.

Learning Objectives

Overall, the placement aims to build clinical confidence, enhance assessment skills, and develop an appreciation of teamwork, adaptability, and compassionate care within a fast‑paced emergency environment.
